When I first started planning my room, Atmos and other '3D' sound systems weren't a thing. I think I just got obsessed with having as many speakers as possible for a bit! To paraphrase Jeff Goldblum, I was too busy thinking whether I could, to stop and think whether I should…

The FX are so effective in bipole mode that they threw a sound effect across the room that I was sure was coming from the left ceiling speaker, but when I checked again was all from one of the FX’s. Now I get a much better sound field with two Atmos ceiling speakers ahead of my sitting position, the two FX behind me at about 45 degrees each and then I’ve used two silvers at the back of the room for the 7 part! The back surround are always pretty subtle but make for a bigger sound field for me. I switched to Silver FX which I mounted further behind me, and disabled the two Atmos ceiling speakers behind me as they were so close to the surrounds. I went from 5.1.4 to 7.1.2 and moved the surrounds from beside me to behind me, despite the previous placements being more aligned with the Dolby guides - as is said in a post above, in a relatively typical UK room (18 x 13), having a lot of speakers close to your sitting position feels like you’re overloading your senses, and with the side surrounds so close to me I felt like they overwhelmed the other speakers.
